Song Background | |
Written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics), the song Georgia on My Mind was first recorded by Hoagy Carmichael and his Orchestra with Bix Beiderbecke on trumpet and Hoagy Carmichael on vocals. The lyrics were originally written by Stuart Gorrell for Hoagy’s sister, Georgia, but are ambigeous enough to be able to refer to the State of Georgia. In fact the Georgia on my Mind became Georgia’s state song in 1979. Many great artists have recorded the song including Willie Nelson and Ray Charles. I’ve listed the versions that I’ve been particularly influenced by below | |
Suggested Listening | |
Ray Charles Album – Georgia on My Mind You definitely want to get this vocal version into your head. |
Martin Taylor Album – In Concert A master of fingerstyle guitar, this version by my guitar mentor Martin Taylor |
Joe Pass and Ella Fitzgerald Album – Sophisticated lady If anyone was wondering, it’s a Joe Pass guitar that I play, can you hear any similarities….nice comments only please! |
John Scofield Album – That’s What I Say Lovely version played on acoustic guitar |
Tommy Emmanuel Album – Centre Stage And yet another guitar great. I love the blues guitar feel to this version both from the guitar and the harmonica. Fingerpicking blues guitar and blues guitar chords will be covered in the Guitar lessons course |
